The Nigerian Navy (NN) has said that piracy in Nigeria is no longer a threats and under control.
According to the Navy, Nigeria has gone five years without a single recorded case of piracy in its waters.
This milestone was announced by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, during the recent passing out parade of the 2025 set of Young Sailors at the Nigerian Navy School in Ikot Ntuen, Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking through Rear Admiral Gabriel Aligwe, Chief of Administration at the Navy School, Vice Admiral Ogalla shared how a comprehensive approach of continuous naval operations and advanced surveillance has transformed the safety of Nigeria’s waterways. “We have different operations ongoing all over the country, including Operation Delta Sanity,” he noted. “At every point, we have Nigerian Navy ships patrolling the seas to keep us safe. The fact that Nigeria has recorded zero piracy cases in five years speaks volumes about the efforts and dedication of our men.”
The graduating young sailors were encouraged to carry this spirit of duty and resilience forward as they embark on their military careers. Vice Admiral Ogalla urged them to pursue their dreams with determination, assuring them that many would be absorbed into the Navy or continue their training at the Nigerian Defence Academy. “The training you have received here provides a solid foundation for a bright and fulfilling career in the military,” he said.
The significance of this achievement was echoed by Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who congratulated the young sailors on their academic and military excellence. He stressed the importance of maintaining focus, discipline, and integrity as they step into broader society. “With the quality of education and training you have received, I am confident you have the potential to succeed,” his representative, Commissioner of Education Prof. Ubong Umoh, told the graduates. “Stay focused, shun vices, and build a future you can be proud of.”
This period of unprecedented maritime security marks a hopeful new chapter for Nigeria, as sustained naval vigilance helps secure vital sea lanes, protect the blue economy, and foster safety for coastal communities. The five-year streak of zero piracy cases stands as a testament to the Navy’s determination and the growing strength of Nigeria’s maritime defenses.
