The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of five suspected kidnappers believed to be part of a notorious gang that also engages in armed robbery. Among those apprehended is a man who confessed to being a deserter from the Nigerian Army. A cache of arms, ammunition, and charms was also recovered during the raid. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed in a statement that the arrests were made on August 27, 2025, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu. The operation, described as swift and intelligence-driven, came just a day before the burial of young entrepreneur and fish dealer, Late Ifesinachi Martin Onyekesi, popularly known as Fish Magnet. The only son of his parents, Onyekesi had been abducted from his home in Awka on July 27 and was later killed by his captors.
According to police reports , the suspects — Michael Nwobodo (30), Eze Friday (29), Uche Okolo (23), Chinedu Gilbert (29), and Dominic Oraz (38) — were linked to a recent kidnapping incident at Isiagu, Awka. Their victim, abducted while working on his farmland, was released after a ransom was paid. Acting on credible intelligence, officers tracked the gang to their hideout in Notoko, Awka, where they were arrested. During interrogation, Dominic Oraz admitted to deserting the Nigerian Army in November 2024. Police say they have opened communications with the military to guide further action on his prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, commended the officers for their courage and professionalism, stressing the Command’s determination to dismantle criminal networks across Anambra. He reassured residents of their safety and encouraged them to remain law-abiding, stay alert, and promptly report any suspicious activity.
